Winner of the Women in Art, H.S.O.A. Emerging Abstract Painting Prize
About
Lindsey Tyson is a visual artist based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where she also grew up. With a background in textile design and over three decades of creative experience, she began her career in the automotive industry, designing woven fabrics, before developing a successful practice in contemporary textile art. Her deep love of texture, materiality, and process runs through all her work. In recent years, she has turned her focus fully to painting, bringing the same curiosity, craftsmanship, and sensitivity to surface that have always defined her creative approach.
About the Work
Lindsey’s current practice centres on abstract mixed-media painting, inspired by the elemental forces of the landscape – shifting light, weathered surfaces, and the rhythm of nature. Her work is both intuitive and physical, shaped by layers of paint, texture, and energy. Marks are swept, scraped, and erased, echoing the forces that shape the land itself.
Rather than depicting place, Lindsey seeks to distil its atmosphere – the meeting point between external landscape and internal response. Process is at the heart of her practice, each layer building a sense of history and depth. Her paintings often reveal traces of earlier marks and moments, holding a feeling of time and transformation. Through this process, her work invites contemplation – the surfaces encourage closer looking, revealing quiet subtleties of tension, energy, and presence.
