Winner of the Women in Art, H.S.O.A. Emerging Abstract Painting Prize
About
Lindsey Tyson is an award-winning visual artist based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where she also grew up. With a background in textile design and over three decades of creative experience, she began her career in the automotive industry, designing woven fabrics, before developing a successful practice in contemporary textile art.
Her deep love of texture, materiality and process runs through all her work. In recent years, she has turned her focus fully to painting, bringing the same curiosity, craftsmanship and surface sensitivity that have always shaped her creative approach.
About the Work
Lindsey’s current practice centres on abstract painting, inspired by landscape, weather and the overlooked beauty of everyday surroundings – the shapes, lines, surfaces and rhythms that often go unnoticed.
Her work is both intuitive and physical, built through layers of colour, texture and movement. Marks are swept, scraped, stained, erased and revealed, allowing chance and material behaviour to play an active role in the process.
Rather than depicting place directly, Lindsey seeks to distil atmosphere and feeling – the meeting point between external surroundings and internal response.
A restrained palette often heightens the sense of contrast, tension and presence, while layered surfaces reveal traces of earlier marks and moments.
Through this process, her paintings hold a sense of time, transformation and quiet energy. They invite slow looking, encouraging viewers to find their own connections within the work.
